My clothes come out of the spin cycle much wetter than they used to — why?
QWe shipped our US washer to the UK and installed it with a voltage transformer. It runs, but clothes come out far wetter after the spin cycle than they ever did back home, and towels especially seem to take forever to dry afterward. Is this a transformer problem?
AYes — this is a classic sign the washer is spinning at the wrong frequency. Spin-cycle water extraction depends heavily on how fast the drum's motor can actually turn, and on 50Hz power a 60Hz-rated motor turns roughly 17% slower than designed. Slower spin speed means less centrifugal force, which means less water extracted before the load comes out. A voltage transformer doesn't touch this at all, since it only changes voltage. You'd need a voltage and frequency converter so the motor actually receives 60Hz and reaches its designed spin speed.
Is a gas dryer safe to run on 50Hz power with just a transformer?
QI have a US gas dryer — the heating comes from gas, not electricity, so I assumed the electrical side barely matters and a basic transformer would be fine. Is that right, or am I missing something?
AIt's a common assumption, but the gas burner is only part of the picture. The drum motor, the igniter/ignition control board, and often the electronic timer or control panel are all electrical and frequency-sensitive, even though the heat itself is gas. On the wrong frequency, the drum motor can run at the wrong speed (affecting tumbling and drying time), and control boards that use the mains frequency as a timing reference can misbehave — slower or inaccurate cycle timing, error codes, or premature control-board failure are common symptoms. Can I use one converter for both my washer and dryer, or do I need two?
QWe're bringing both a washer and an electric dryer overseas. Can we run them off a single converter, or does each appliance need its own unit?
AYou can run both off one converter as long as it's sized for their combined load, including startup surge, and you're not planning to run heavy cycles on both simultaneously for extended periods. Add up each appliance's running wattage (check the rating label on the back of each unit) and choose a converter with meaningful headroom above that combined figure — motors and heating elements both draw well above their steady-state rating for a moment at startup.
