Can I run my US refrigerator on 220V/50Hz power?

QI'm moving from the US to Portugal and want to bring my Samsung refrigerator with me instead of buying a new one. It's rated 120V/60Hz. My understanding is I just need a step-down transformer for the 220V → 120V part — is that enough, or is there more to it?
AA step-down transformer only solves the voltage half of the problem. Your refrigerator's compressor is driven by an induction motor whose speed is locked to the incoming frequency — on 50Hz instead of 60Hz it runs about 17% slower, which reduces cooling capacity and refrigerant flow at exactly the time of day the compressor is working hardest. Because a refrigerator runs continuously, not intermittently like a stove or mixer, that mismatch shows up as poor cooling, longer compressor run times, and extra wear rather than an outright failure — which is often why people don't realize frequency is the cause. You need a step-down voltage and frequency converter rated for continuous duty, not just a voltage transformer, and sized above your refrigerator's running wattage to handle the compressor's startup surge.

Does a refrigerator need a converter that's always running, or can it cycle on and off?

QI've read that some converters are only rated for intermittent use. My refrigerator's compressor cycles on and off throughout the day but the unit itself is always plugged in and needs to be ready to kick on at any time. Does that matter for which converter I buy?
AIt matters a lot. Some lower-cost converters are rated for short bursts rather than sustained, all-day operation, and a refrigerator is one of the worst-case appliances for that limitation — it needs to be ready to deliver full compressor power at any moment, 24 hours a day, for years. Look for a continuous-duty rated converter, sized comfortably above the refrigerator's running wattage to absorb the compressor's inrush surge every time it cycles on (compressors can draw 3–5× their running wattage for that first fraction of a second). My refrigerator runs but doesn't seem to be cooling as well since we moved — could it be the frequency?

QWe moved from Canada to Spain a few months ago and brought our fridge with a basic voltage transformer. It turns on and the light works, but it just doesn't seem as cold as it used to, and it runs almost constantly now. Could the 50Hz power be the reason?
AVery likely, yes. A voltage transformer alone can leave the fridge running on the wrong frequency, which is a common reason for exactly this symptom: the unit turns on and appears to work, but the compressor is spinning about 17% slower than it was designed to, so it can't move enough refrigerant to keep up — hence the near-constant running and the softer cooling. The fix isn't a bigger transformer, it's a real voltage and frequency converter that regenerates true 120V/60Hz power, so the compressor runs at the speed it was engineered for.
